What I Meant When I Said I Was Stepping Away From Writing

Fiction’s on pause, but I’m still writing. Just in a different way.

I Do This For My Culture

WELCOME FRIENDS

In my last issue, I said I’d be stepping away from writing for a while. That was true, but not in the way some of you may have taken it.

What I meant was that I’d be stepping away from fiction writing. The long nights spent spinning characters, dialogue, and plot arcs had to take a back seat for now. I still love it, and I’m proud of what I’ve written, but it was becoming hard to balance the creative energy fiction requires with the momentum I’m building in other areas of my life. And the way I want to launch my Author career can’t be accomplished until I’ve done some things in my Entrepreneurial career.

So while the novel drafts are staying closed for the moment, I realized I’m still writing, just in a different way.

What’s New: Rethinking Nurtured

Since stepping back from fiction, I’ve been focused on building Nurtured, which started as a GTM agency and media brand for SaaS startups.

But recently, I realized my target audience was off.

I was creating for companies I didn’t really relate to, and over time, that started to show in the work. So I took a step back and asked a hard but honest question: Who do I actually want to build for?

The answer was simple: people like me.

Solopreneurs, creatives, builders, and content creators trying to grow something from scratch.

So that’s the new direction. And as part of that, I’m excited to say I’ll be launching a new version of the Nurtured newsletter called The Nurturing Process, a resource for content creators who are building their brand, growing their audience, and turning their voice into a business.

It’s something I’ve been slowly crafting behind the scenes, because I’m in it too. I’m also learning how to show up more consistently, share what I know, and build a personal brand that’s real, not performative. I’m figuring it out one post at a time, and I want The Nurturing Process to help others do the same.

I’ll be more thoughtful about this newsletter’s launch and will apply lessons learned from past newsletters I’ve written.

You can check out my recent social media posts here:

The quality and quantity of the content will increase once I feel like I’ve nailed the consistency.

A New Chapter: Built Not Hired

This shift also led to the creation of Built Not Hired, a brand and community for people who are done waiting for permission.

It’s for side hustlers, creatives, and anyone trying to build their own path, whether that’s a brand, a business, or just a better way of working.

The newsletter is packed with practical strategies, income ideas, and real talk about what it takes to create something from scratch.

I’m working on a podcast behind so people can hear from real builders out there actually doing the work.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, or someone you know might benefit, I’d love for you to check it out:

What’s Next For Me, Nurtured, & How Nev Sees It

I’ve decided to build Nurtured slowly now. I was trying to rush things before. That made me spend more money than I should have, but I’m grateful for the lessons learned.

With that being said, I’m now back on the job market looking for Account Executive roles, and I’m turning Nurtured into a side-hustle that mainly customizes CRMs for solopreneurs and content creators. Over time, Nurtured will offer more support. It will help content creators and solopreneurs launch and grow brands. But slow and steady wins the race.

This newsletter (How Nev Sees It) will shift to a monthly rhythm. I want to write with more intention, not just out of habit. And honestly, slowing down a bit feels good.

Thanks for reading and riding through these changes with me.

I may not be writing fiction for now, but I’m still telling stories. Just through a new lens, and with a new kind of urgency.

Talk soon,

Nev
